Hormone & Perimenopause Support in Sydney |
Sonia Savage, Functional Nutritionist
Whether you are dealing with difficult periods, the pain of endometriosis, or the way your body seems to have changed overnight in perimenopause, and whether you have been told it is "just your hormones" and to get on with it, you are in the right place. Your hormones are one part of a much bigger picture, and once we look at the whole of it, there is a great deal we can do to help you feel like yourself again.
Book a Hormone ConsultationIs This You?
Your cycle brings pain, heavy bleeding, PMS, or symptoms that disrupt your life
You are living with endometriosis and want to reduce the pain and inflammation, not just manage it
Your brain has started to falter: losing words mid-sentence, forgetting why you walked into a room, blanking in a meeting
Weight has settled around your middle, seemingly overnight, when it never used to
You are suddenly reacting to foods or alcohol that never bothered you before
You were a great sleeper, and now you are wide awake at 3 am
Your GP has run bloods, said everything is "normal", and sent you on your way, but you know something is not right
It's Not "Just Hormones", and It's Not in Your Head
For years, your hormones quietly buffered inflammation and protected you behind the scenes. As they shift and decline through perimenopause, that buffering lifts, and issues that were bubbling under the surface start to appear. That is why you can suddenly develop food sensitivities, aches, histamine reactions or sleep problems, seemingly out of nowhere.
So yes, hormones are part of it, but only one part. A drop in progesterone, often one of the first changes, can create a relatively oestrogen-dominant state, which is one reason histamine symptoms and new alcohol intolerance appear. Meanwhile, gut function, nutrient status, stress, thyroid, blood sugar and inflammation are all in the mix. When someone tells you it is "only hormones", they are looking at a single piece of a much bigger puzzle.
How I Support You Through Hormonal Change
Root Cause, Not Band-Aids
I take a proper timeline of your health, then look at what is genuinely driving your symptoms now, whether that is hormones, gut health, blood sugar, nutrient depletion, thyroid, histamine, or all of the above.
Optimal, Not "Normal"
I review your bloods against optimal levels, not simply the standard reference range, and I will often suggest a few extra tests your GP may not routinely run, so you know exactly where you sit and where we are heading.
The Right Testing, When It Helps
Where useful, the DUTCH test shows not just your hormone levels, but how you clear oestrogen, androgens, and cortisol across the day. It is especially valuable if you are considering, or already using bioidentical hormones (MRT).
Methylation and Genetics, Where It Helps
With 10 years of specialised experience in nutrigenomics, I can look at how well you are methylating, the process that supports hormone production, mood and detoxification, and personalise your plan. This matters more, not less, during a hormonal downturn.
Food First, Always
My approach is a lower-carbohydrate, whole-food, Mediterranean-style anti-inflammatory way of eating. Not keto for its own sake, not fad diets, never rigid rules. Real food, good protein, plenty of vegetables and fibre, adjusted to you.
Working Alongside Your Medical Team
I work alongside your GP (ideally an integrative one) and any bioidentical hormone care you may choose, never instead of them.
What Working Together Looks Like
Before we meet, complete your health history and share any recent bloods. I review everything beforehand.
Initial Consultation
A thorough conversation about your history, symptoms and goals, so we can map out what is likely driving how you feel.
Your Roadmap
A clear, staged plan covering nutrition, targeted supplementation where genuinely needed (dispensed through Vital.ly), sleep, movement, stress and environment.
Testing Where It Changes the Plan
Additional bloods against optimal ranges, and where useful, a DUTCH hormone test, GI-MAP or DNA testing.
Regular Reviews
We track your progress and adjust as your body changes.
Timeframes, Honestly
This is long-term work, and that is the point. We manage your symptoms now- the pain, brain fog, mood, sleep and weight- while investing in your longevity: keeping your brain, heart and metabolism healthy for the decades ahead. Many women notice meaningful shifts in energy, sleep and clarity within the first weeks to months, while bigger changes build over time. Every woman is different, and I will always be honest about what I can and cannot help with.

Frequently Asked Questions
My bloods came back "normal" but I feel terrible. Why?
The standard battery of tests is often only part of what you actually need, and the reference range is not the same as the optimal range. Reference ranges are skewed because people usually get tested when unwell. I review your results against optimal levels and check what has not been tested, which is frequently why women feel unwell despite "normal" results.
Is keto or fasting good for women in perimenopause?
For most women, a lower-carbohydrate wholefood diet works better than strict keto long-term. Short-term keto can suit some people, but not everyone, especially with autoimmune conditions or diabetes. A gentle overnight fast of around 13 hours can support blood sugar, but skipping food all day tends to backfire on mood and hormones. The right approach is individual.
Can you work with me alongside bioidentical hormones (MHT)?
Yes. Nutrition and functional support work well alongside bioidentical hormones, and the DUTCH test can be particularly useful if you are considering that route, as it shows how you are clearing hormones. I work with your prescribing doctor, not instead of them.
Can nutrition help with endometriosis?
Nutrition support can help address the inflammation that drives endometriosis symptoms, alongside your medical care. Every person is different, and I will be honest about what is realistic. A multifaceted approach is essential for endometriosis - alongside nutrition, gut health takes centre stage, with emerging research linking Fusobacterium infection to lesion development.
Do you offer online consultations?
Yes. I consult online worldwide, with in-person appointments available in Sydney.
