Autoimmune & Thyroid Support in Sydney |
Sonia Savage, Functional Nutritionist
In any given week, close to half the clients I see have some form of autoimmune process underway: Hashimoto's, Graves', coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. This is core territory for my practice, and it's where targeted nutrition can profoundly affect how you feel and function.
Book an Autoimmune ConsultationIs This You?
You've been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, Graves', coeliac disease, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis or another autoimmune condition, and medication is the only tool you've been offered
Your thyroid antibodies keep climbing, and no one has explained what you can actually do about it
You're exhausted, foggy, achy or inflamed, and your bloods keep coming back "normal"
Autoimmunity runs in your family, and you want to get in front of it rather than wait
You're managing an autoimmune condition and planning a pregnancy
Dampening the Fire, Not Just Managing the Label
I want to be clear about what I do and don't claim. I never suggest an autoimmune condition can be cured. What I work towards, alongside your medical team, is dampening the inflammation that drives symptoms and progression, supporting the systems under strain, and helping prevent further autoimmune conditions from developing, because they do tend to cluster.
The Anti-Inflammatory Diet, Done Seriously
This is the area of my practice where I'm toughest on my clients, with love. A focused anti-inflammatory diet over four to six months can produce a very different picture in the bloods, and I've watched thyroid autoantibodies fall dramatically on diet-led protocols. There's less wriggle room here than in general wellness work, and I'll be upfront about that from day one.
Root Cause Investigation
Autoimmunity rarely arrives out of nowhere. We look at gut health (most of your immune cells live in the gut), infections, nutrient status, stress, toxins, possible mould exposure, and genetics. A robust clinical history matters enormously: when did this start, and what was happening in your life and environment at the time?
Optimal, Not "Normal"
I track the markers that matter, including autoantibodies, inflammatory markers and nutrient status, against optimal ranges, and you'll always receive a written summary so you can see your own progress.
Working Alongside Your Medical Team
I work alongside your GP or specialist, never instead of them. Nutrition support complements your medical care, and I'll communicate with your care team where helpful.
What Working Together Looks Like
Before we meet, complete your health history and share recent blood results and any specialist letters. I review everything beforehand.
Initial Consultation
A deep dive into your history, your symptoms and your results. We map out what's driving the inflammation and where to start.
Your Plan
A staged anti-inflammatory nutrition plan, targeted supplementation where genuinely needed (dispensed through Vital.ly), and lifestyle and environmental changes, with clear priorities rather than an overwhelming list.
Testing Where It Changes the Plan
GI Map, mycotoxin testing, organic acids (OATS), genetics or further bloods, only where the result will alter what we do.
Regular Reviews
We retest, track your markers, and adjust. This is a partnership over months, not a one-off appointment.
Timeframes, Honestly
Autoimmune work is a four-to-six-month commitment at minimum, and the clients who get the best results are those who go all in on the dietary work for that period. Most people notice changes in energy, digestion, and general wellbeing within several weeks, while changes in blood markers take longer. I'll never promise specific results, and I'll always be straight with you about what your bloods are showing.
From Clinic
Many of my autoimmune clients arrive after years of being told nothing more can be done beyond medication. Watching someone's inflammatory markers fall, their energy return, and their sense of agency return is why I do this work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can nutrition really lower thyroid antibodies?
Diet-led anti-inflammatory protocols can meaningfully influence the inflammatory picture in many clients, and I've seen substantial falls in thyroid autoantibodies. Everyone responds differently, which is why we test, track, and adjust rather than guess.
Will I have to give up gluten/dairy/everything I love?
For autoimmune work, there is genuinely less wriggle room than in general nutrition and I'll be honest about that. But the goal is a diverse abundant way of eating not deprivation.
I'm on thyroid medication. Can I still work with you?
Yes. I work alongside your GP or specialist, never instead of them. Nutrition support complements your medical care, and I'll communicate with your care team where helpful.
My bloods are "normal", but I feel terrible. Can you help?
This is one of the most common things I hear. Standard reference ranges are based on a bell curve that includes many unwell people. I assess your results against optimal ranges and look at markers that are often never ordered.
Do you see clients outside Sydney?
Yes, I consult online worldwide, and I have many autoimmune clients interstate, including a strong client community in Western Australia.
