Strengthening the Immune System Beyond Quick Fixes like Decongestant Nasal Sprays

Here in Sydney we have had some wild & chilly weather and with that can come colds, flus and viruses. What am I seeing a lot of in clinic? People relying on decongestant nasal sprays - for weeks not days. While over-the-counter medications like decongestant nasal sprays can offer short-term relief, they often don’t address the root cause of why we’re falling ill in the first place.

Why Getting to the Root Cause Matters
The immune system is our body’s natural defence mechanism. When functioning optimally, it identifies, responds to, and eliminates pathogens like viruses and bacteria. However, when we experience recurring infections, sluggish recovery, or chronic sinus issues, it’s a sign that something deeper may be going on. This could be due to nutritional deficiencies, chronic stress, gut imbalances, poor sleep, or underlying inflammation.
Treating symptoms without understanding why they’re happening is like mopping up water from a leaking pipe without fixing the pipe itself. The symptoms might disappear temporarily, but the root issue remains—and often worsens over time.
The Problem with Overusing Decongestant Nasal Sprays
Decongestant nasal sprays can provide rapid relief from a blocked nose, helping us breathe easier during a cold. But their overuse, especially for more than 3–5 consecutive days, can lead to a condition known as rebound congestion—where the nasal passages become more swollen and congested once the spray wears off. I see this in clinic all the time. It's a frustrating cycle: the more you use the spray, the worse the congestion becomes when you stop. In some cases, individuals become dependent on nasal sprays for daily breathing comfort, ignoring the real issues behind chronic congestion—such as poor immune health, environmental triggers, food sensitivities, or chronic inflammation.
Supporting Immune Health from the Inside Out
To truly fight off viruses and prevent frequent infections, we need to support and strengthen our immune system at its core:
Nutrition: Adequate intake of immune-supportive nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, and omega-3s is essential. A diet rich in whole foods, colourful vegetables, and healthy fats provides the body with what it needs to repair and defend.
Gut Health: Around 70% of our immune system resides in the gut. An imbalance in gut flora can impair immune response. Incorporating prebiotic and probiotic foods helps support a healthy microbiome.
Sleep & Stress Management: Chronic stress and lack of quality sleep can suppress immune function. Prioritising rest and relaxation is not indulgent—it’s foundational for good health.
Hydration & Mucosal Integrity: Staying well-hydrated and avoiding irritants (like cigarette smoke and excessive nasal spray use) helps maintain the integrity of our mucous membranes—our first line of defence against airborne invaders.
